Youth Day carries a weight that should not be rushed past.

It reminds us of young South Africans who stood up in a difficult and dangerous time because education mattered. Their actions became part of our country’s history, but the heart of the day is still very relevant now.

Education still matters. Access still matters. Opportunity still matters.

The difference today is that education is no longer only about what happens in a classroom. A young person applying for work, studying further, building a small business, sending a CV, using online banking, joining a Teams meeting, or learning a new skill is already dealing with the digital world.

That can be empowering, but only if people are given a fair chance to understand it.

Digital skills do not have to mean advanced coding or a career in IT. Sometimes it starts much smaller. Knowing how to use email properly. Understanding basic online safety. Spotting suspicious links. Working with documents. Using cloud tools. Searching for reliable information. Communicating clearly and professionally online.

These are simple things, but they can make a real difference.

On Youth Day, we remember the past with respect. We also look at the young people of today with hope. South Africa has no shortage of talent, creativity, or determination. What is needed is continued investment in education, practical skills, and the tools that help people move forward.

May this Youth Day be a reminder of where we come from, and of the future still worth building.
