Wi-Fi 7 is starting to appear in more laptops, phones, routers and business access points, which means the inevitable question is coming up during network upgrades: should your business move to Wi-Fi 7?
The answer is not automatically yes.
Wi-Fi 7 is a significant step forward, but buying the newest access points does not magically give an office a faster network. Your switches, cabling, internet connection, device mix and even the layout of the building still determine what users actually experience.
For some businesses, Wi-Fi 7 is a sensible investment now. For others, a well-designed Wi-Fi 6 network will do exactly what they need for years.
The important part is knowing the difference.
Wi-Fi 7 is more than a bigger speed number
A lot of the marketing around new Wi-Fi standards focuses on maximum speed. Those numbers look impressive, but they are not what makes Wi-Fi 7 interesting for most businesses.
Wi-Fi 7 introduces improvements such as Multi-Link Operation, wider channels and more efficient use of available spectrum. In practical terms, compatible devices can make better use of multiple wireless bands and deal with busy environments more effectively.
That matters in offices where wireless networks are doing much more than they did a few years ago.
There may be laptops, phones, tablets, meeting room systems, printers, scanners, TVs, cameras and other connected devices all competing for airtime. Add cloud applications, video calls and large file transfers, and Wi-Fi has become a serious part of the business infrastructure.
South Africa also has access to the lower 6 GHz spectrum band for Wi-Fi, which gives modern wireless networks additional room to operate away from the increasingly crowded 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands.
But having access to newer technology does not mean every office needs to replace everything immediately.
Your internet connection may still be the bottleneck
Imagine replacing every access point in the office with Wi-Fi 7 equipment while the business still has a 100 Mbps internet connection.
Your shiny new wireless network may be capable of moving data extremely quickly inside the building, but everyone still shares that same 100 Mbps connection when accessing the internet.
The Wi-Fi was not the problem.
This is one reason we prefer looking at the entire network instead of one specification on a product box.
For businesses heavily dependent on cloud applications, the internet connection and its redundancy may make a much bigger difference to everyday productivity than replacing perfectly capable Wi-Fi 6 access points.
What is behind the access point matters too
The access point is only one part of the network.
If a new access point can communicate faster than the network port feeding it, that network port becomes the limit. Older switches commonly provide 1 Gbps connections, while newer wireless infrastructure may benefit from 2.5 Gbps or faster connectivity.
Then there is Power over Ethernet.
Business access points are commonly powered through the same Ethernet cable carrying their data. Newer, higher-performance access points may have different power requirements from the equipment being replaced.
Suddenly a "Wi-Fi upgrade" can involve new access points, new switches and power considerations.
That is not a reason to avoid Wi-Fi 7. It is a reason to plan the upgrade properly.
Do not forget the cabling
The cable above the ceiling is not particularly exciting, so it tends to be ignored until it becomes a problem.
A business may have invested in good structured cabling years ago and be perfectly positioned for an upgrade. Another may have a mixture of old cable runs, questionable terminations and additions made over many years by different contractors.
Replacing the access points without checking the physical network underneath them can leave expensive equipment running below its potential.
Before upgrading, it is worth knowing what cabling is installed, what speeds it can reliably support and whether the existing network points are where the access points should actually be located.
Your devices need to support Wi-Fi 7 too
This is probably the easiest part to overlook.
A Wi-Fi 7 access point does not turn an older laptop into a Wi-Fi 7 device.
Businesses usually have a mixture of hardware purchased over several years. Some new laptops and smartphones may support the latest wireless standards, while older machines continue using Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6.
That is completely normal.
It also means the value of upgrading depends partly on your hardware replacement cycle. If most of the company's devices cannot use Wi-Fi 7 features yet, replacing a healthy wireless network purely to get Wi-Fi 7 may achieve very little today.
On the other hand, if you are already replacing ageing access points and switches, planning for newer devices arriving over the next five years makes much more sense.
Where Wi-Fi 7 starts making sense
There are environments where the benefits become easier to justify.
A busy office with a high number of wireless devices, large meeting rooms, heavy cloud use, frequent video conferencing or large local file transfers may benefit sooner.
It can also make sense when an organisation is already due for a wider network refresh.
If the switches are ageing, the access points are nearing replacement and the business expects significantly more wireless traffic in the coming years, installing another generation of older equipment purely because it is cheaper may create another upgrade sooner than necessary.
That is where Wi-Fi 7 becomes part of infrastructure planning rather than a technology purchase.
You may not need it yet
If your existing Wi-Fi 6 network is reliable, properly designed and comfortably handles the number of devices using it, there may be no strong business case for replacing it today.
That is okay.
IT infrastructure does not need to contain the newest version of everything. It needs to support the business reliably.
A badly designed Wi-Fi 7 network can still have dead spots, congestion and poor performance. A properly designed Wi-Fi 6 network can still provide an excellent experience.
The standard printed on the access point does not fix poor placement, overloaded switches, bad cabling or an undersized internet connection.
Upgrade the network, not the badge
Wi-Fi 7 is impressive technology, and it will increasingly become the normal choice as older wireless equipment reaches the end of its useful life.
The mistake is treating it as a standalone upgrade.
Before replacing your access points, look at what is underneath them. Check the switches, cabling, power requirements, internet connection, coverage and the devices actually using the network.
